The Ethiopian government, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has been engaged in conflict with Fano rebels, a militia group that was previously allied with the government but later refused to disband.

Human rights organizations and media outlets have documented multiple incidents of drone strikes, including one that killed five civilians in Wegel Tena and another that resulted in 30 to 40 deaths in Amhara Sayint. The United Nations has expressed concern over the impact of these strikes on civilians.
